HVAC Tune-Up Checklist for Homeowners

HVAC Tune-Up Checklist for Homeowners

Your HVAC system is important for ensuring comfort in your home all year. To ensure that your house is warm in the winter and cool in the summer, your HVAC system needs to function optimally.

Keeping your HVAC system in good shape requires regular maintenance. Here at Chapman Air & Heat, we provide a comprehensive HVAC maintenance plan that will ensure your system is efficient and reliable throughout the year.

Here is a checklist of things that require assessment when carrying out an HVAC tune-up:

Filters

HVAC filters are always the first thing you should check. Filters often become clogged and filled with contaminants such as bacteria, lint, microorganisms, and dust. Regularly checking, cleaning, and, when necessary, replacing your filters is a very important part of an HVAC tune-up.

Filters that have not been checked or changed for a long time can cause your HVAC system to work harder than necessary to provide air into the home and can also be the cause of contaminants being spread throughout the house. Clean and regularly maintained filters can ensure that the air being distributed through the HVAC system is healthy and hygienic.

Refrigerant Lines

Your refrigerant lines should be checked to ensure they are in good condition. While old-fashioned refrigerant lines were usually made out of copper, some modern systems use aluminum as it is cheaper. However, aluminum lines tend to corrode and rupture more easily than copper.

Therefore, it is important to check the lines and make sure there are no ruptures or leaks anywhere, which can lead to a loss of refrigerant and an ineffective HVAC system. If you notice any leaks or detachments in your refrigerant lines, you should call a professional HVAC maintenance expert to replace or resolder the lines and ensure they are functioning correctly.

Check For Clogging

The condenser drain in your HVAC system can develop mold and algae if left uncleaned for a long time. If these growths are not attended to as soon as possible, they can cause clogging and pose potential health hazards.

Not only are mold and mildew unsafe from a health perspective, but they can also cause the HVAC system to lose efficiency and underperform. Therefore, checking your condensate drain is an important part of HVAC maintenance.

Check Your Fan Blades

Fan blades, while relatively robust, can wear down over time. Depending on the HVAC system you have installed, some fan blades could be made of a lower-quality material and corrode more easily.

Any signs of damage on the blades, for example, from objects that may have been sucked in and caught, should prompt you to call a professional HVAC expert who can replace the blades and ensure everything is in tip-top shape.

In addition to checking that the blades are in working condition, they should also be cleaned periodically, as a significant amount of dust and lint can build up on the blades, creating an unhygienic environment.

There are many other aspects of your HVAC system that require checking. Here at Chapman Air & Heat, we can provide you with a comprehensive HVAC maintenance plan that includes a full HVAC maintenance checklist. Contact us today to have a professional come out to assess your HVAC system and ensure that it is in perfect working condition!
